The body

Illness makes a stranger of your own body. It has become a thing that is monitored, discussed by other people, and photographed from the inside, and it is doing something you did not authorize.

The faith is unusually unembarrassed about bodies. Yours is not a container you are stuck in, it is you, and it is not less yours for having gone wrong.

Begin

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

St. Peregrine, help me not to hate this body that is having a hard time.
