Scrupulosity
He was famously short with people who confessed the same imagined sins over and over, and famously gentle with people confessing something serious for the first time in decades. The severity went to the anxious and the tenderness to the guilty, which is the opposite of what most people expect.
If your conscience has become a machine that never issues a clean verdict, that is not holiness and he would have told you so.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
