Day 6

The gift of counsel

Counsel is knowing what to do next when the rules have run out. Most hard decisions are not between right and wrong, which would be easy, but between two goods, or two harms, with incomplete information and a deadline.

It is the gift that shows up as a quiet clarity after prayer that was not there before it. It rarely announces itself. People who have it often cannot explain why they chose what they chose, only that they stopped being torn.

Begin

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of thy love. V. Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created. R. And thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in his consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today’s petition

Come, Holy Spirit, and tell me what to do about the thing I have been turning over for weeks.

Add your own intention here, in your own words. It is not stored anywhere.

Close

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
