The gift of fortitude
Fortitude is not courage in the dramatic sense. It is the strength to keep doing the right thing after the feeling that made it easy has gone, which is where nearly all real difficulty lives.
The saints who needed it most were rarely in danger. They were in long marriages, long illnesses, long assignments, and long silences. Fortitude is what carries a person through the middle of something, and the middle is always longer than expected.
Begin
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of thy love.
V. Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created.
R. And thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray. O God, who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in his consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
