The gift of piety
Piety has been ruined by its own reputation. It does not mean fussiness about devotions. It means the affection a child has for a parent, applied to God, so that prayer stops being a duty performed and becomes a person addressed.
Most people who have prayed for years hit a stretch where the words go dry and the affection goes with them. Piety is the gift that puts the warmth back, and it is asked for rather than manufactured.
Begin
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of thy love.
V. Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created.
R. And thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray. O God, who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in his consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
