St. Titus

Who they were

Titus was a Greek convert and one of Paul's most trusted co workers, and his assignments describe his temperament better than any adjective. He was the man Paul sent into the situations that had gone wrong: to Corinth in the middle of its crisis, carrying the hard letter and bringing back the news that the church had come round, and then to Crete, to organize a church from scratch among a people their own poet had called liars and brutes.

The letter to him is a working document for exactly that job: appoint elders, town by town, and hold the line on what sound teaching is. Where Timothy is the anxious heart that stays, Titus is the steady hand that goes. Tradition has him remaining as bishop of Crete to old age, which is its own quiet verdict on the man. The Church keeps their feast together on the day after Paul's Conversion.

Why people turn to St. Titus

Anyone handed the assignment nobody else wants, and the fixers sent into other people's messes. Crete claims him by right.
