Who they were

John Henry Newman was the most famous churchman in England, Oxford's golden preacher and leader of the movement renewing the Church of England, when the long honest argument he was having with history reached its conclusion and cost him everything. In 1845 he was received into the Catholic Church, losing his position, his university, most of his friendships, and his country's regard in a single step.

He spent decades under suspicion from both sides, too Catholic for England and too English for Rome, founding the Birmingham Oratory as one of Philip Neri's sons, writing the Apologia that won England back, The Idea of a University that still defines liberal education, and the Grammar of Assent on how real people actually come to believe. Leo XIII made the old man a cardinal in 1879, and he took the motto cor ad cor loquitur, heart speaks to heart. His hymn Lead, Kindly Light, written becalmed at sea years before his conversion, is the whole biography in three verses: I do not ask to see the distant scene, one step enough for me. He was canonized in 2019.
